Ask a Marathon neighbor what "summer" means on Key Vaca and you will not get an answer about the weather. You will get a date. The last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday of July, when the lobster sport season opens and the island reorganizes itself around the water for forty-eight hours.

This year that date is July 29 and 30. What follows below is not a visitor's guide. It is a look at how the next three weeks actually run in Marathon, from the mini-season dive flags off Coffins Patch to America-Fest at Marathon Community Park, and why the calendar you already know is more tightly wired to the working waterfront than most towns in the Keys.

The Wednesday Everything Stops

Mini season is often described as a two-day recreational harvest. That undersells what happens on the ground. For thousands of families, Lobster Mini Season has become the unofficial "Family Reunion Week" of the Florida Keys, with vacation homes throughout Marathon and Key Colony Beach reserved six to twelve months in advance and multiple generations traveling in to gather under one roof. Docks fill early. Coolers get loaded the night before. By the time the sun clears the Seven Mile Bridge on Wednesday morning, the canals are moving.

The dates are set by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission on a rolling formula, which is why locals already know the next few years by heart: in 2026 it runs July 29–30, in 2027 July 28–29, in 2028 July 26–27.

If you live here, the practical detail worth internalizing is not the date but the shoreline rule. During the two-day sport season and the regular lobster season that follows, no snorkeling or diving is allowed within 300 feet of residential or commercial shoreline, and that includes canals and any public or private marinas. For canal-front homeowners, that is the difference between a peaceful backyard and a legal problem at your seawall.

Why the Keys Rules Are Not the Florida Rules

Most of the mini-season confusion visiting friends bring with them comes from applying statewide numbers to Monroe County. They do not match. If a cousin is flying in from Fort Lauderdale with a cooler and a tickle stick, this is the conversation to have before they leave the house.

The bag limit is the one that catches people. In Monroe County the mini-season limit is six spiny lobster per person per day, half the sport-season limit for the rest of Florida. The daily limit stays at six through regular season here as well.

Two more items worth knowing before Wednesday morning. First, the license situation shifted this year: as of 2026, non-resident short-term recreational fishing licenses are no longer available online, and short-term non-resident licenses are available only in-person at Monroe County Tax Collector offices, which are not open on weekends. If you have out-of-state guests arriving Tuesday night, they cannot fix this at 6 a.m. Wednesday. Second, no spearing, and no taking from no-take zones like Coffins Patch, Sombrero Key, or Looe Key. The buoys are yellow. They are not decorative.

What Happens On Land That Week

The two days on the water bracket a run of on-land events that most calendars miss because they are not tourism-facing. They are the working island's own social schedule.

• Monday, July 20 — Fish Out of Water performs live at Dockside Boot Key Harbor, 6:30 p.m. A Boot Key Harbor show is as close to a neighborhood front porch as Marathon gets in July.
• Thursday, July 23 area — Plant Bingo continues at the Courtyard by Marriott Faro Blanco Resort, a low-key weeknight local fixture through the summer.
• Friday, July 31 — Name the Bar and Blessing of the Fleet, 9 p.m., at 3502 Gulfview Avenue, gulfside at the end of 35th Street. That address is Keys Fisheries. The upstairs adults-only raw bar, Clawsablanca, offers oysters, clams, stone crabs, and craft cocktails with panoramic water views and a complimentary nightly sunset rum punch toast. The Blessing lands the night after mini season closes, which is not coincidence. It is the working fleet's transition from sport harvest to commercial preparation for August 6.
• Saturday, August 1 — Marathon's America-Fest, celebrating 250 Years of Independence, kicks off at Marathon Community Park at 6 p.m. This is the follow-up event to a Fourth of July that Rotary president and parade organizer Kelly Williams called the largest parade that anyone could remember, drawing 44 participants. August 1 is the encore.
• Every Sunday, all summer — Sunset Grille at the foot of the historic 7 Mile Bridge hosts what it bills as the Florida Keys' longest-running Pool and Beach Party. Locals treat it as a Sunday standing appointment more than an event.

There is a smaller category worth naming too. Mr. Beans Books and Beans, formerly Keys News and Coffee, hosts a Mindful Wellness Walk on Thursday mornings at 11. If you moved here in the last eighteen months and still call it Keys News, that rebrand is the tell that you have not been in recently.

August 6 and the Shift

Regular lobster season opens at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, August 6, and runs through March 31, 2027. The rhythm changes immediately. Commercial traps go in the water. The sport-season crowd on the patch reefs thins out. Bayside canals quiet down. If you have been putting off a paddleboard morning out of Sombrero Beach or a slow drift through Boot Key Harbor, the first week of August is the window.

Two things to keep in the back of your mind for that stretch. Sombrero Beach is a turtle nesting beach, and from April through October it is not unusual to have loggerhead turtles coming onto the beach at night to lay their eggs, and during active turtle nesting season the City limits human activities near active nests. The marked-off sections are small. Give them the space.

The other is parking. If you live here full-time you already have the registration handled, but for family arriving to visit, the fee structure at the beach and the boat ramps is worth mentioning in advance. Non-residents pay $25 for launching and retrieving at public ramps plus a $20 daily parking fee, the city uses license plate recognition at the beach and ramps, and full-time residents and property owners in Marathon and Key Colony Beach are exempt.

What This Says About Living Here

The reason Marathon's late-July calendar feels tight-knit is that the events are not stacked on top of each other by a tourism board. They accrete around a single fixed point on the water. The Blessing of the Fleet is timed to the closing of mini season. America-Fest lands the weekend before regular season opens. Sunset Grille's Sunday parties book-end the whole thing. Even the wellness walks and the bingo nights sit in the seams of that schedule because the people running them know when the marina is full and when it is not.

The 7 Mile Bridge Run in April gets the postcards. Mini season into early August is when the island actually shows you how it works.
